WilkinsonEyre and Boele Architects have been selected to design a new multifunctional sports and events arena at České Budějovice in the Czech Republic.

The winning scheme in the international competition was chosen from 29 entries. Governor of the South Bohemian Region Martin Kuba described the scheme as a “unique design” and said the jury had been “unanimously enthusiastic”.

The arena is designed to accommodate volleyball as its primary sport, with provision for handball, floorball, basketball and futsal. It is also intended to be used for concerts and conferences, with a flexible internal layout to support multiple configurations.

The project forms part of a broader masterplan for the south of the city and also includes a new public square that aims to create a clearly defined entrance to the České Budějovice Exhibition Grounds.

The design takes inspiration from the Möbius strip, a continuous form with one side and one edge. According to the architects, the concept “embodies energy, unity, and perpetual motion”.

WilkinsonEyre board director Sam Wright said: “We are thrilled to have been selected for this exciting project, which presents a unique opportunity to build on our design expertise and passion for sports architecture.”

Construction of the arena is expected to begin in 2026.
